When I was a kid you had to work at D&D now with fancy ass version 4.0 it's all spelled out for you. No creativity.

I've not played any version of DND personally, but as a life-long DNDer himself I know Benjamin doesn't care for 4.0 either. He said it now tries to be like an MMORPG. FWIW, he really enjoyed 3.5 so maybe give that a go instead.
